Recently the github repository, https://github.com/996icu/996.ICU/ gets increasingly popular.
In fact this is a repository not for programming purpose. It just contains a blacklist of those companies that actively violate labor laws or regulations, and continuously enforce their employees to do intensive overtime work. 996 stands for the unwritten rules that work from 9AM to 9PM and 6 days a week. Of course, this is only a simile and many variants exist, for example 10-10-6, 10-10-5, and etc.
As the maintainer says, 996.icu simply means working in 996 way, and finally getting sick in the ICU.
It is embarrassing that lots of Chinese companies are blacklisted, which include big names like Alibaba, Huawei, Tencent, Mi, Baidu, Hikvision, JD, and many others, together with media reports and proofs for them.
But it is just another open secret. Everyone, ridiculously including those labor bureau officials, already knew it. That is why this repository is trending up so quickly. It is not because people are getting interested to know the facts, but because people finally find a place to outlet their helpless and anger. Most of the time it is programmers that suffer, and it is also ONLY programmers that visit github.
Unfortunately nothing will change. Soon after the repository gets focus, major web browsers made by Chinese companies block its access saying that it violates certain government rules (It is thus a joke: companies that do evil say the others that disclose it are guilty. Hint: use Firefox, Chrome, or even IE instead).
Why won’t it change? Because those companies pay huge tax to local government, and play an important role in so called China 2025 roadmap. They represent the industrial transition and have strong PR capabilities. On the other hand, labors are abundant thus cheap, and they also have to struggle hard in order to survive in big cities. Leave could be a choice but only the last one.
996.icu will not change things. But it is an attempt. As of the time I write the post, this repository is marked by nearly 200,000 programmers, the number can be translated to around 20,000 SCRUM teams. This is not a small one.
Nowadays money speaks, at least in China. More and more are mentally poor no matter physically rich or not. How would our decendants think when they look back at our times?
Just a reminder if we look back history, at the two strongest dynasties in Chinese history, Han and Tang. It is emperor Wu that reigned Han after around 70 years since its establishment, and then Han dynasty went a falling path. It is emperor Wu Ze Tian that usurped Tang dynasty after around 70 years since its establishment. And we are at exactly 70 years since P.R.C is established.
It is not easy to create something great, but it is as difficult to keep it and be on the right path. Big as a country, small as a business, they all run under hidden rules. Temporarily it may be quick by breaking what is right, but eventually it will have effect. Life is short making us sometimes unable to find the effect immediately, but it does exist no matter people admit or not.
When you see the github star count, you know programmers are not as alone as you think . And once there is an attempt, there will be more.
I will do my exclusive unique tactic to boost your website rankings. Edgar Pedraja
I have figured out some significant things through your site post. One other subject I would like to mention is that there are lots of games out there designed specifically for toddler age small children. They contain pattern identification, colors, pets, and styles. These generally focus on familiarization instead of memorization. This makes a child occupied without having the experience like they are studying. Thanks Britt Baldock
Very good point which I had quickly initiate efficient initiatives without wireless web services. Interactively underwhelm turnkey initiatives before high-payoff relationships. Holisticly restore superior interfaces before flexible technology. Completely scale extensible relationships through empowered web-readiness. Anibal Amedee
Next time I read a blog, Hopefully it does not fail me as much as this particular one. I mean, Yes, it was my choice to read through, however I actually believed you would have something helpful to say. All I hear is a bunch of crying about something you could fix if you were not too busy looking for attention. Buck Laycock
